International Conference of NBP, FED and ECB
September 28 - 29, 2006, Warsaw, Poland
The National Bank of Poland (NBP), the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FED) and the European Central Bank are organizing an international conference entitled The Role of Central Banks in Economic and Personal Finance Education.
In the context of the global economy and fast economic and technical development, professional and personnel success to a more and more extent depends on the gained economic knowledge and practical skills related to it. In the contemporary world the economic and financial education of citizens is not only the problem of state authorities. Taking account of its significance, it is also a common challenge to a number of public institutions and non-profit organizations.
Weak understanding of economic issues in society is a serious challenge for any central bank. It is difficult to explain principles and effects of a monetary policy and its impact on the economic development of a country, if people do not understand fundamentals of the market economy or are not aware how economic processes influence their day-to-day life.
Taking this into consideration, already a few dozen of central banks from all over the world have undertaken actions in the field of the economic education. These actions take different forms - from standard ones (publications, leaflets, brochures, web sites, training, workshops, seminars and conferences) up to more complex ones (economic education portals, multimedia presentations, computer games, e-learning courses, interactive education centres, comic strips as well as film series and cartoons). The Warsaw Conference will serve as a platform for sharing experience in this area.
Presidents, deputy presidents of central banks, representatives of monetary policy committees, managers of departments responsible for social communication in the central banks will participate in this Conference. Among the invited speakers and guests there are also representatives of other institutions exerting influence on the activities related to economic education: the OECD, the World Bank, government institutions, international organisations acting for economic education, universities and academic agencies, funds and associations. All in all, the representatives of the institutions from over 40 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and both Americas will take part in this Conference.
The NBP, as a conference organiser, has gathered a lot of experience in conducting education projects and it is ready to share it with other banks and education institutions.
