– new issue of NBP collector coins
Date: 14-01-2013
On Tuesday, 15 January 2013, the National Bank of Poland is putting into circulation occasional coins commemorating 100 years of Teatr Polski in Warsaw – one of Poland’s most important theaters. The National Bank of Poland is going to honour this anniversary by issuing two coins with the face values of 10 zł, struck in silver, and of 2 zł, struck in Nordic Gold.
Teat Polski was founded by the initiative of Arnold Szyfman, and during his lifetime it gained the status of the best theatre in Poland. It opened on 29 January 1913 with the premiere of “Irydion” by Zygmunt Krasiński. The most outstanding Polish actors and actresses performed on the stages of Teatr Polski – Nina Andrycz, Mieczysława Ćwiklińska, Jadwiga Smosarska, Eugeniusz Bodo, Adolf Dymsza, Halina Mikołajska, Anna Seniuk, Tadeusz Łomnicki, Gustaw Holoubek and Andrzej Łapicki, to name only a few. Plays staged in Teatr Polski were directed, among others, by Leon Schiller, Aleksander Zelwerowicz, Ludwik Solski, Aleksander Bardini and Adam Hanuszkiewicz. At present, Andrzej Seweryn is the theatre’s Head Director.
The reverse of both coins features an image of the front part of the building of Teatr Polski in Warsaw. The obverse of the silver coin represents an image of a bas-relief of Irydion, which decorates the façade of the building of the theatre. The 10 zł coin and the reverse of the 2 zł coin have been designed by Urszula Walerzak, and the obverse of the 2 zł coin – by Ewa Tyc-Karpińska.
The silver coin will be sold at the price of 125 zlotys in the Kolekcjoner online shop and at cash desks of the NBP Regional Branches from 17 January 2013. A total of 28,000 pieces of the silver coin and 880,000 pieces of the coin struck in Nordic Gold will be available to collectors. The 2 zł coins struck in Nordic Gold may be obtained at par value exclusively at the NBP Regional Branches as from the date of issue, i.e. 15 January 2013. More information, including images of the coins, can be found at the National Bank of Poland website.
