”GENERAL K. PUŁASKI” GUIDED MISSILE FRIGATE – The last coin of the “Polish warships” series

Data publikacji strony: 12-08-2013

On Monday, 12 August, Narodowy Bank Polski will be putting into circulation a Nordic Gold 2 zł coin with the image of the ”General K. Pułaski” guided missile frigate. 800 thousand coins have been minted for that purpose. Starting on the day of issue, they will be exchangeable at face value in the regional branches of NBP.

The coin commemorating the ”General K. Pułaski” frigate is the eighth and last coin of the “Polish warships” series devoted to famed Polish warships. To date, NBP has issued in succession coins with the images of ORP Błyskawica, ORP Orzeł, ORP Dragon, ORP Piorun, ORP Gdynia, ORP Warszawa and ORP Lublin.

The reverse of the coin shows the ”General K. Pułaski” frigate against the background of the sea. The traditional obverse includes the national emblem and the notation of the year of issue and face value. The reverse was designed by Grzegorz Pfeifer, while the obverse was designed by Ewa Tyc-Karpińska. The coins commissioned by NBP were struck by the Mint of Poland.

The ”Gen. K. Pułaski” was built in 1978-80 in the Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath (Maine, USA). It remained in US service for 20 years as USS ”Clark”. In 2000 it was handed over to the Polish navy by the American government under its programme of military aid. The Polish military ensign was first hoisted on the ship on 15 March 2000 in the US naval base of Norfolk. On 25 June 2000 the vessel was given her current name. At present the frigate forms part of the division of battle vessels of the 3rd Warship Flotilla in Gdynia. Her standard displacement is 3,045 tonnes, her maximum speed 29 knots and her range – 4,500 nautical miles.

The presentation of the coin will take place on 15 August (Thursday) in the Naval Port of Gdynia-Oksywie, open on this day for visitors from 11 a.m. The programme includes, among others, a visit to four Polish Navy warships – the “General K. Pułaski” frigate being one of them – and the ceremony of “launching” the coin, which will take place at 2 p.m. An NBP coin exchange stand will be set up on the port premises offering an opportunity to exchange 2 zł circulation coins for coins featuring the image of the warship.

Narodowy Bank Polski holds the exclusive right to issue the currency of the Republic of Poland. All coins and banknotes issued by NBP, including collector coins and notes, are legal tender in Poland. More information on the issue of collector coins and notes by NBP can be found at the NBP website as well as in the “NBP commemorative coins” folder.
