Modernised banknotes already in circulation
Date: 07-04-2014
On Monday 7 April 2014 Narodowy Bank Polski put into circulation the first bank-notes with modernised security features. The changed banknotes with denominations of 10, 20, 50 and 100 zloty were put into circulation as part of the standard operation of supplying commercial banks with cash. They will replace worn or damaged banknotes that are withdrawn from circulation. All currently used banknotes will remain legal tender indefi-nitely.
The design of the modernised banknotes has not been changed, but the use of new security features means that the differences between the new banknotes and the banknotes of the previous issues will be visible. The most important changes that Poles will notice on the modernised banknotes are a watermark on a field that is free of print, the introduction of iridescent ink and an improved recto-verso security feature , i.e. the see-through register. It should be noted that the 200 zloty banknote will remain unchanged for the time being.
What should you remember?
- On 7 April NBP began supplying commercial banks with modernised banknotes and as of this date they entered into general circulation.
- The modernisation of banknotes is a purely technical operation – the design of the banknotes has not changed significantly, only the security features have changed.
- The banknotes that had been in circulation before 7 April 2014 will remain legal tender indefinitely.
- The 200 zloty banknotes will not be modernised for the time being; however, the modernisation of banknotes is a constant process aimed at ensuring the security of curren-cy circulation.
