Poland’s balance of payments in April 2018

NBP data: In April 2018, the current account of the balance of payments (BoP) posted a surplus in the services account (PLN 7.3 billion) and the trade in goods account (PLN 1.3 billion) and deficits in the primary income account (PLN 8.2 billion) and the secondary income account (PLN 0.5 billion). The combined current and capital accounts balance was positive and amounted to PLN 2.1 billion.

Preliminary data on Poland’s BoP for April 2018, released by Narkodowy Bank Polski on 13 June 2018, show a deficit of PLN 0.1 billion on the current account. In the corresponding month of 2017, the balance was positive and amounted to PLN 1.2 billion.

Exports of goods stood at PLN 72.1 billion and were PLN 5.0bn (i.e. 7.5%) higher than a year earlier. Imports of goods grew by PLN 5.7bn (i.e. 8.8%) to PLN 70.7 billion. As a result, the balance in the trade of goods was positive and amounted to PLN 1.3 billion. In April 2017, it was also positive at PLN 2.0 billion.

Typically, the services balance, which amounted to PLN 7.3 billion, was positive. Receipts from export of services were PLN 18.7 billion and, compared with April 2017, increased by PLN 0.9 billion (i.e. 4.9%). Expenditure on import of services stood at PLN 11.4 billion, having increased by PLN 0.6 billion (i.e. 5.3%) on the corresponding month of 2017.

The primary income balance was negative and amounted to PLN 8.2 billion. In the corresponding month of 2017, it was also negative and amounted to PLN 7.3bn. The negative primary income resulted mainly from a negative balance of investment income (PLN 7.7 billion).
