Poland’s balance of payments in June 2020

NBP data: In June 2020, the current account of the balance of payments posted surpluses in the trade in goods account (PLN 11.8bn), services account (PLN 6.1bn), secondary income account (PLN 0.1bn) and a deficit on the primary income account (PLN 5.4bn).

Preliminary data on Poland’s balance of payments in June 2020, released on 13 August 2020, show a surplus of PLN 12.6bn on the country's current account. In the corresponding month of 2019, this balance was positive and stood at PLN 0.1bn.

Exports of goods amounted to PLN 83.1bn and were PLN 5.7bn (i.e. 7.3%) higher than in the corresponding month of 2019. Imports of goods decreased by PLN 5.3bn (i.e. 7.0%) and amounted to PLN 71.2bn. Trade in goods showed a surplus of PLN 11.8bn.

Exports of services stood at PLN 16.1bn, representing a decline of PLN 7.1bn (i.e. 30.6%) on the June 2019 figure. Imports of services amounted to PLN 10.0bn, having decreased by PLN 3.5bn or 25.7%.

The balance of the primary income account was negative at PLN 5.4bn. Foreign direct investors’ income on their equity investments in Polish entities amounted to PLN 4.0bn. The negative primary income account was also determined by the balance of portfolio investment income, which was negative at PLN 0.7bn and the negative balance of interest on other debt instruments shown in other investments in the amount of PLN 0.1bn.
