Collector coins – general information

Apart from coins in general circulation, including Nordic Gold coins of 2 złoty denomination, Narodowy Bank Polski also issues gold and silver collector coins to be sold both at home and abroad. They are intended to commemorate events, anniversaries and well-known personalities etc., as well as to satisfy collectors' demand. The issuing of collector coins was started in the middle of the sixties.

At present, the following series of collector coins have been launched: "Polish Travellers and Explorers", "Animals of the World", "Monuments of Material Culture in Poland" (previously "Castles and Palaces of Poland"), "Polish Painters of the Turn of 19th and 20th Centuries", "The Polish Calendar of Traditional Customs and Rituals", "History of the Polish Zloty", and various occasional coins. Gold and silver collector coins are usually minted in proof quality by the Mint of Poland in Warsaw They are put into round plastic capsules, and the gold ones – additionally into boxes with attached certificates of technical data and a brief description.

In addition, there are ounce coins (made of 9999 fine gold 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 oz.) with a stylised image of the Golden Eagle – which are also referred to as investment (or bullion) coins. They are minted for hoarding purposes. Gold ounce coins are firmly sealed in special plastic packages, so-called CertiCards. Every package is enclosed with a foiled certificate of technical data and a brief description. The prices of the ounce coins are updated daily, and depend upon the gold price on the London Stock Exchange and the USD exchange rate.

All coins issued by NBP are legal tender in Poland.

The NBP Regional Branches sell collector items to natural persons (individual customers) in the territory of Poland. The sale of collector items to legal persons is conducted by the NBP Regional Branches and the Cash and Issue Department of NBP at 11/21 Świętokrzyska Street, Warsaw.
