Carl Bertelsmann's Award for Leszek Balcerowicz 07.09.2001 On Monday, September 10th this year, President of the NBP, Leszek Balcerowicz, will be honored with the Carl Bertelsmann's award for the year 2001 in the German town Gutersloh. Bertelsmann's Foundation grants a prestigious international Carl Bertelsmann's award every year since 1988. The award is given for innovative and model solutions in social and political and economic areas. This year's award with a motto "Forming changes - strategies of transformation" emphasizes merits of its winners and their involvement with peaceful transformation of totalitarian systems and state dominated economic structures into democratic countries with market economy. This year, the award was granted to the representatives of two countries - Poland and Bolivia. Besides Leszek Balcerowicz, among the award winners from Poland were Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Adam Michnik. The award for Leszek Balcerowicz is an appreciation of his outstanding achievements in the area of economic transformation of Poland and other former communist countries, expressed by leading representatives of German scientific, political and economic circles. It is especially emphasized that as finance minister he initiated an innovatory, called by his name, plan of economic reforms during the first years of transformation. Macroeconomic decisions made by Leszek Balcerowicz at the beginning of the 1990's became a foundation of permanent and effective structural changes in Poland. |
